There have been posts on how to put sling swivels on a 10/22 TD stock (applicable to synthetic stock as well.) but none showed how to reinforce the studs.
It is easy once you know how to access the inside of the butt stock.
If you intend to install a bipod or even a single point sling, just drilling a hole in the stock and screwing in a stud won't give the required strength to prevent it from pulling out.
The answer is to put in machine screw sling studs and reinforce them with epoxy putty.
First - getting into the butt stock.
Take a small fine bladed flat screwdriver and very carefully pry the butt plate out slightly. (It is NOT cemented in, it is a friction fit.)
Then use a wider blade flat screwdriver in the widened slot and give it a smack with the palm of your other hand and the butt plate will pop off.
Inside the fore end there is a bulkhead just back of where the barrel clamp fits. Locate your front sling stud there. Drill a 3/16' hole in the mould parting circle. (I missed by 1/32') you need enough room for the flat of the nut to clear the bulkhead.
On the butt stock locate the moulding centerline on the bottom of the stock, (it is faint but you can find it.) and make a small hole 11/4' in from the end edge.
Then carefully drill a 3/16' hole there.
Carefully scrub out the insides of the plastic with dish soap and an old tooth brush, to remove the release agent, which can keep the epoxy putty from sticking. Dry carefully. Use a file and rough the surface a bit around the screw and nut where you are going to put the mound of epoxy putty to give some grip to the epoxy. Install the sling studs, tighten, and then carefully pack around the stud screws and nut with a mound of JB epoxy putty.
Reassemble the stock to the receiver and barrel and after the epoxy has hardened - you are good to go.

You will need two sets of Uncle Mikes sling swivel studs set. Toss the wood screw type in your parts box and use the two machine screw and nut studs.

Good write-up. I would recommend cleaning the area where the epoxy is with alcohol after washing with soap, just to be sure there is nothing left to prevent the epoxy from bonding, though.

My 10-22 Sling Kit, ( Uncle Mike's 1641-2) has a 'Barrel Band' connector. My 10-22 Takedown has a plastic barrel band. Inserting the connector BETWEEN the halves of the barrel band prevent it from being tightened down, and won't stay put. I had to enlarge the hole in the part provided, and attached it OUTSIDE the barrel band.
Option 'B': remove material from the half of the barrel band that doesn't have the recess for the nut.
I used 80 grit sandpaper, grit side against the part without the nut-recess. Takes 10 minutes.

Barrel Band Ruger 10/22 Steel Blue Or Just want this one for the front band QD stud, since the 1' swivels is too small for the Garand sling: BlackHawk Lok-Down Sling Swivel Set Ruger 10/22, $14 (comes with all the wood screws - best choice - then just need QD swivel kit from below) Lok-Down Sling Swivel Set Ruger 10/22 44 Carbine Number 3 1. Expand the capabilities of your Benelli shotgun or rifle with a quality sling attachment upgrade component. MGW carries these items in a wide variety of configurations; find magazine cap swivel mounts, QD mounts, stock bolt sling accessories and more. Get a grip on your firearm, and that grip starts with a well crafted sling attachment from Benelli. I'm debating upgrading the sling and swivels on my 10/22 Sporter. It came with one inch fixed swivels, so for QDs I have to remove the loops and drill the stud hole all the way through. No problem, I did that to a Carbine model years ago. I'm wondering about size, and why there are 1 inch and 1.

I just got 10/22 takedown and I would like to put a sling on it, and therefore a sling swivel set.
Does anyone have any recommendations on how to do this and what swivel sets to use?
Here is one set, for example http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=40168/Product/SWIVEL-SETS
I saw a thread for making liberty training rifles, but all the links to parts from midwayusa were broken.
I found this video about installing sling swivels on the 10/22 TD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rooCvJ6Bd_o
I guess the 10/22 TD buttstock is hollow, so the guy recommends using epoxy on the screw for the rear swivel mount.
He also suggests removing the barrel band, does anyone have insight on whether this a good/bad idea, or pointless? I can certainly see how less stuff touching the barrel would allow for greater accuracy, that is the whole idea behind having a floating barrel anyway, isn't it?

I installed the Uncle Mike studs and swivels 26 some years ago on my 10/22 and haven't had any issues. I use the little barrel band piece for the front swivel stud. I haven't used a bipod on the gun because for many years, I used it almost exclusively for small game hunting in the woods. MADE IN THE USA! The Appleseed Sling Connector is designed for temporary use on a rifle that does not have front swivels to attach a sling. Thread the metal tab through the leather slot and place the Connector on your rifle. Then simply attach your sling (not included). Click on product image for illustration.
